With the sheer number of characters in the book, it's gonna be difficult narrowing it down to 12. The Slytherin Harry angle didn't even occur to me... But there was that whole Horcrux thing that I can't remember very well... So maybe Harry could turn evil even though he picked Gryffindor over Slytherin? Not to mention double agents like Snape. Or is that triple agents?

Erm ok, I dunno but I do think people are making it more complicated than it is. There should be 2-3 mafias this round since there's more ppl than usual. Voldemort (duh), that dude who can turn into a rat? (sorry my memories of Harry Potter just isn't with me now), not sure about the possible third but Lucius Malfoy? (since he is a death eater)? then there's your vigilante(s)? I bet Sirus could be one of them...

People keep saying shit and all I hear is blah, blah, blah...

I'm definately not a Harry Potter expert. (refer to my quiz result) . But i know for certain that there are alot of characters and many story arcs within the story.So it is gonna be difficult to figure out the characters and all the possible set ups...well for me it will be so im not gonna go down that path for this round :S

Okay, well, I'd prefer it if we could just go with the assumption that Harry is a good person. At least while he is alive. Maybe if the townspeople lynch him he becomes a bad guy or something but Lenalesca is right - there should be 2/3 mafia or 2 mafia/1~2 third party role(s) and then everyone else should be good guys. Let's just work with that until we are proven otherwise.

Thanks Stebung for giving me a list of names - it would be more helpful if you could tell me more - what is the character like? What kind of like, powers did they have in the series, or what kind of spells did they specialise in, or what kind of relationships they had with other characters - that kind of thing would be more useful than a list of 12 names because... names don't really help if you don't understand the character.

Basically - do you think there will be masons in this game? What kind of powers would people (both good and bad) have? Like I assume Harry Potter is either unlynchable or a Judas or something, based on what people are telling me about him possibly being a bad guy (I think Harry being a Judas is unlikely, by the way, though that is contingent on a few of my other assumptions). How many likely cops/doctors/vigilantes? How about third party? Like is there anyone in books 5~6 who would come across like a serial killer or jester or something?

The trouble is not everyone has posted yet, so I'm not happy to want to start lynching anyone.

Unfortunately, there is no sure way of knowing who is mafia and who is not. If you are a normal townsperson, you don't really ever know. You just... have a stab in a dark, or go with your instincts. Sometimes people say things that will come off as suspicious and other people will say things that aren't suspicious.

During the night phase (once someone has been lynched on this day), the detective - if there is one in this game - is able to pick one player and ask the moderator(s) of the game whether s/he is mafia, and that's one definite way of knowing. There are other roles/abilities such as masons who... at least know who is not mafia.

Yeah i know...thats the problem with forum games.
The start of the game is usually the longest as ppl are usually cautious on how to act, so everyones basically waiting for someone to make the first move (ie: screw up).

Asking questions worked last time because TIG did it last round (and he had to study everyone's answers and I'm SO not gonna do this, you take over Edwin XD) AND everyone wasn't guarded, but seeing how the questions were the mafia's undoing (or more likely Edwin was the undoing but hey) last time, they're gonna be extra cautious this round to act non-suspicious. So the only difference really, is to see if there's any slight difference in posting habits. Of course that works only for the old players and since we just got a fresh batch of newbies...this is going to be no easy task.

umm i have a suggestion of dementors being 3rd party killer, because they target anyone when hungry?

hmm... Sirius Black could be the vigilante and Fenrir Greyback could be the serial killer "..Fenrir Greyback is a werewolf notorious for his savagery and preference for attacking children. He is a leader in his community and strives to infect as many people as possible with lycanthropy, hoping to build an army strong enough to take over the wizarding community eventually..."
Dumbledore on the other hand could be the doctor and use pheonix tears to keep a person from being lynched/killed.
I think either Arthur Weasly or/and Snape might have some sort of cop/detective roles. Arthur, who works in the ministry of magic as head of the Office for the Detection and Confiscation of Counterfeit Defensive Spells and Protective Objects and Snape who was revealed to be working as a spy for the Order.

I don't know if 12 people are enough. As far as I'm concerned, most forum mafia have over 20 people and sometimes games with over 20 people have only one mafia group.

It depends on the storyline/fandom as well - with Harry Potter could you see possible candidates for there to be two mafia groups?

as for the possibility of two mafia groups, wait, is that even possible? i mean, i know i havent played for that long, but two mafia groups kinda sounds pretty technical and probably more suited for a game with like 15+ players maybe, thats just my opinion.

wow XD. ok bak on topic: indeed a lot of new ppl here that hav signed up hasn't posted. It could be the newbie syndrome (dunno what to post) or the mafia could be one of them, wanting to keep a low profile as most mafias want to do...

LCP brought up an interesting but confusing point earlier about Harry having to be lynched before going over to the dark side? XD I'd like a bit of elaboration on this.

I meant two groups as in two seperate mafia groups btw. But yeah it would be a bit technical for a 12 person game .. we'd all need to have alot of powers just survive :S .

WHAT two groups?

From my own knowledge of HP, i hardly think there would be two groups of mafia. Theres three main groups, Deatheaters, The Order and everyone else in between.

A revised list of characters..

The Order
Dumbledore - doctor
Snape - detective/cop, spy
Tonks - she herself is a Metamorphmagus, an ability to change her physical appearance without the need for a potion or a spell to assist. Although she can change physically i dont think she can imitate a person's powers
Lupin - cant think of a role atm
Mad-eye Moody - detective/cop, hes got a magical eye that sees through everything and has an all around vision (gotta check this up..)
Ron - i cant help myself but to say he's the back up doctor. The theory how Ron is Dumbledore...lol

Harry - what lcp had said, if he got lynched he might turn mafia, thats a judas right?

Sirius - vigilante

Kreacher - just for lulz.. the jester?

Deatheaters(mafia)
Voldermort - God father
Bellatrix - might die in the place of Voldermort if he is lynched. Bellatrix is extremely loyal to voldermort

i would say im about as much of a harry potter fan as fat kids are to salad, well i guess a bit more than that, more like a fat kid to low fat ice cream, would eat it but only if its there. ive seen all the movies, at the movies, but its kind of become like a family tradition since we dont do anything as a family these days, my mums all like "when harry potter comes out, we gonna go see it together"

Okay, so im reading through my character description and i think i have a way to prove that i am basically a useless goodie, but i cant do it just yet i think

Although since everyone else seems to be doing it, i think ill give a go at guessing who may be in the game.

Harry, Ron, Madeye Moody, Ginny, Luna, Hagrid, Voldermort, Bellatrix, Snape, Lucuis, Draco and im not sure who else

I dont think Sirius is in the game because didnt he die just before the end of book 5 and pyro+salt said something about the story for this taking place between book 5 and 6? But then again that might mean Dumbledore isnt in it either then? I dont know though.

I have a question, how come most have you listed so few bad guys, do the good guys out number the bad guys 2 to 1 in this game or something like that?

I think he's referring to the LAST game where steven killed him when he was on Hods side... :S

and nah no one has actually died yet,its just that the mod/narrator is always listed first as dead so we dont get a random killing at the start.So we all at least get a chance to play... :S cuz these games take time to set up

IF what ppl are saying is true and that Harry or other ppl can be converted to mafia then i think its plausible... There's also third party roles like the SK or Survivor to consider too..So that can bring numbers down a wee bit.

In most mafia games, townies outnumber the mafia 3:1 or 4:1.

So, no, 3 mafia would not be too little. The mafia know each other and this gives them a huge advantage, as they can talk and plan their moves and strategies to win. As a townie you only know that you yourself are innocent and you don't know who to believe.

If there are 3 mafia, ignoring the fact that there might be vigilantes, we need at least 3 days to kill them, and the chances of killing all of them in the first three days are slim. In that time they can kill 2 or 3 of us. If there's the same number of townspeople and mafia, the mafia automatically win.

It'll be difficult this round I think, but not impossible. We just have to be cautious.
