gc-X's First Review: P!ATD - Vices and Virtues

Post by gc-X on Mon Mar 28, 2011 3:55 pm

So TIG hasn't done a review since his 3rd week of doing them, oh well, I'll do one till his next, and of course the album I will be reviewing will be the latest from Panic!(yay, exclamation mark is back) at the Disco:
(WARNING: May be a little biased lol)

Panic! at the Disco - Vices and Virtues (2011)

TRACKLIST:
01 - The Ballad of Mona Lisa
02 - Let's Kill Tonight
03 - Hurricane
04 - Memories
05 - Trade Mistakes
06 - Ready to Go (Get Me Out of My Mind)
07 - Always
08 - The Calendar
09 - Sarah Smiles
10 - Nearly Witches (Ever Since We Met)

[Deluxe Edition Only]
11 - Stall me [Bonus Track]
12 - Oh Glory (demo) [Bonus Track]
13 - Bittersweet [Bonus Track]

Vices and Virtues is Panic!'s third album and first album since the departure of guitarist, Ryan Ross, and Bassist, Jon Walker. For alot of people, Vices reminds them why they got into Panic! in the first place, for me personally though, it fills the void ever since the band split in half back in 09. I was one of the people that actually got into Panic! after hearing their second album 'Pretty, Odd', which I know is actually pretty odd seeing as most Panic! fans hated that album. I wasn't a huge fan of the first album at first, but grown to like it just as much.

The sound of Vices has been described as having the sound of 'A Fever', while maintaining the clarity of 'Pretty, Odd' and i concur. I really didn't know what to expect from this album. Their ex-guitarist Ryan Ross was also their main songwriter (that man is a genius), but I reckon front man Brendon Urie did a good job filling in as main lyricist.

Vices has a good rock / pop sound that was easy to get into on first listen. Songs like 'The Ballad of Mona Lisa' and 'Let's Kill Tonight' have those kind of choruses that you can't help but sing along to. It also has a few slow songs that brings the pace of the album down, but in a good way. The album's last track 'Nearly Witches (Ever Since We Met) takes the album out with a bang! The track itself was based on a demo released on the Fall Out Boy mixtape 'Welcome to the New Administration' which was released back in 2008!

I love the bonus tracks on this album. Song 'Stall Me' is probably my most favorite song on the album, and 'Oh Glory' filled my curiosity of what the whole song sounded like (those bastards released a 30second clip on their main site 2 years ago!!!!) with 'Bittersweet' being just a fun song that probably wouldn't suit being on the albums main tracklist.

Finally, I rate this Album ***** (5stars!(out of five, for you smartarses out there))

Thank you for reading my review and enjoy Panic! at the Disco - Vices and Virtues, Available on CD and iTunes
Spoiler:

Totally agree with you on not liking their first album. It just seemed everywhere that one. This album is decent enough to listen again for me. Bittersweet just falls out of place being there I reckon kinda like those instrumental tracks you find on most albums that you wouldn't listen to.

I give *** and a half * imo
